All Hail the King!: The (Lucky) 7th Philofaxy New York City Meet-Up

Image
This post is way overdue, by two weeks, in fact.   You may have already seen Steve’s write-up over at Philofaxy .   And since then, he’s been to a second meet-up in Washington, DC .   So, yes, this post is shamefully overdue.   But that’s how much time I’ve had for blogging: zip, zero, zilch.   But I digress… The past couple of years have seen a decline in interest and attendance in the New York City meet up.   I don’t know if it’s the time of year that I typical schedule them or if people are just too busy (understandably so).   Either way, I was unsure if I would organize a meet up again this year because of it, but when Steve—the Philofaxy King, as he is known around social media—contacted me to tell me of his big North American vacation tour, how could I not?   He and I banded together to make it happen—he took names and reservations; I looked into restaurants and shopping locations. Thanks to Nan ’s suggestion, I booked our party for...

5 Weeks of Celebrating 5 Years: Week 1

Image
December 20 of this year marks 5 years since my very first post .   Five years of blogging.   I never thought I’d make it this far.   In that time I’ve “met” some wonderful people, some I’ve met in person, some I’ve yet to meet, some I see on a regular basis.   One I’ve even become very good friends with, who knows more about my life than many of the people I actually see on a daily basis—you know who you are—I am forever grateful for your friendship.   I’ve gotten support in many areas of my life from this community.   What started out as a hobby has become a major part of my life, and one that has opened doors I didn’t even know existed.   So while it started out as planners, it has grown into much more than that. In the past 5 years, there have been many changes, too.   I had to change the name of the blog once and feared I’d have to do it a second time.   I have reconfigured the layout of the blog.   I have created n...

The All You Can Dream Buffet: A Book Review

Image
Source I recently just finished The All You Can Dream Buffet by Barbara O’Neal .   In short, it’s about four women bloggers who become friends through their online community, meet, and share life-changing experiences with each other.   For obvious reasons, I was drawn to this book. Lavender, owner and operator of Lavender Honey Farms in Oregon, invites three women to visit her farm.   Ruby, pregnant and suddenly left by her long-time boyfriend, travels to the farm to heal her broken heart.   Ginny, stuck in a bad marriage for several years, buys an Airstream on a whim, and heads cross-country, just her and her dog, leaving her home state of Kansas for the first time in her life.   And Val, with her daughter, makes an unplanned stop at the farm after losing her husband and two other daughters in a plane crash.   “The Foodie Four,” as they are known to their online community, are getting together to celebrate Lavender’s eighty-fifth birthday. ...

Philofaxy All Stars 2013: J’s Wedding Music

Image
As part of the 2013 Philofaxy All Stars blog tour , J from The Crazy Life of J has offered to do a post on her wedding music.   She and her husband have just celebrated their first anniversary. Photo used with permission from J This post is LONG overdue. Kanalt first asked me to write it about a year and a half ago when she first saw the song I was planning to use for my first dance on my wedding day. Now that I just celebrated my first anniversary, I figure it's about time I sit down and get this post over to her!  We used a local DJ called Music by Design - they were awesome from our first meeting with them to a few days ago when I emailed them, begging them to try and find our song list over a year after our wedding. After we decided on them, we were able to log into our own client area on their website. Once there, we could access all of their songs, and include them on categorical lists according to songs that must be played, songs we would like played, and s...

Friendly Intimacy: The Fifth Philofaxy NYC Meet Up

Image
Yesterday we had a Philofaxy meet up in New York City.   We met at 1 pm at Sam Flax on Third Avenue, shopped a little, and then headed off to Le Pain Quotidien for lunch and filo chat.    There were five of us (Josh, Juan, Michele, Raquel, and myself), all of whom had attended meet ups before, though not at the same time.   Since we were all veterans to the practice, it was easy and fun, much like meeting old friends (and of course, we were!). I was a little early, arriving in the area around 12:30 pm.   So my husband and I went to Barnes & Noble for a bit.   By the time we got to Sam Flax around 12:55, everyone was already there.   So off my husband went to the Apple Store (and stopping at the Ferrari store as well—just to look), and I joined the rest of the group for some Filo shopping fun. First, I did manage to remember to get a photo of the window display. Notice Josh’s reflection in the glass. Then we went in and ma...
